Skip Punta Cana to visit Samana
For my first trip to the Dominican Republic, I decided to skip the typical Punta Cana route and explore Samana and Santo Domingo instead. I’m so happy with that choice. I wanted more than just turquoise water and a resort bubble. I wanted to actually feel the Dominican culture. Find recap here
Arrival and Getting Around
We flew into Santo Domingo and rented a car at the airport to drive to Samana. The drive was a breeze—about two hours on perfectly paved roads with zero issues. In Samana, we stayed in a rental home with a private pool and beach. We stocked up on groceries, grilled, and spent most of our time relaxing at the Airbnb.
Boat Day
One day we rented a boat for a beach trip. Let’s just say, not the most comfortable ride. My bum was hurting after and I couldn’t relax the whole ride because I had to hang on for dear life. I later found out I was overcharged (it should’ve been way less than the $500 I paid for three people), so pro tip: ask around before booking. That said, don’t miss Playa Frontón. It’s only accessible by boat, and the beachside lunch there was so worth it.
Santo Domingo: Cultural Charm & Capital Living
After two nights in Samana, we headed back to Santo Domingo for a quick night in the city.
Local Flavors & Finds
Neptuno's Club Restaurant This restaurant was so beautiful and such a vibe! The fish soup was out of this world. Our waiter Tayson was such an angel. Ask for him!
Don Pepe is a must. I had the shrimp asopao and the cheesecake. 10/10. The restaurant’s also just around the corner from Blue Mall, where you’ll find some high-end shopping.
Larimar was on my list but we didn’t have time but it looks stunning and a nice photo op.
If you’re visiting the Dominican Republic, you have to try Mamajuana. It’s a traditional Dominican Drink. During a tour around Santo Domingo, our guide introduced us to some local fruits, and I ended up trying níspero (also known as loquat). I loved it.
For The Ladies
Obviously I had to get a Dominican blowout while I was there. I went to Hermanos Dueñas Bella Vista. Quick, great, and very affordable.
For Next Time
This trip reminded me how rewarding it is to step off the beaten path. I’d love to return to DR and stay at Amanera. It gives luxury paradise. I hope this post inspires you to venture beyond the usual and discover the DR’s hidden gems!
xoxo, Tao
